Munich

What many critics would initially think to be a blasé' retelling of a political event from the past, is a surprising treat for history buffs and avid flick fans. Steven Spielberg brings us into a piece of history, a simple unfolding that shows the lives of those who became mere pawns in a political game. There are no winners, only losers, and ultimately you perceive there is no good to come from revenge.
Inspired by true events, "Munich" unfolds the passionate story of a secret Israeli squad assigned to assassinate 11 Palestinians whom they believe planned the 1972 massacre of 11 Israeli athletes in Munich, Germany. A personal mission of revenge consumes the team and the man who led it.
Eric Bana does a brilliant job of playing his emotions so delicately, that they are almost too human, too overwhelming. The internal struggle of being torn between his family and his loyalty to his country is played with impressive depth. Daniel Craig and Geoffrey Rush round out a cast that does an amazing job of working together to bring across the physical and emotional impact of this movie.
Bonus features are not your standard, run-of-the-mill "deleted scenes, et al." The strict commentary style is a welcome supplement into the making and tone of the movie. They are informative and something that brings more understanding to the movie itself. It can be a bit heavy to watch all the commentary features in one sitting, so pace yourself. Nary a gag reel would have felt out of place, and was wisely, not included.
Munich is a well-done movie, and ultimately a film that will affect many people on differing levels. Munich is worth its salt and more than deserving of its much-heralded Oscar nomination for Best Picture.
