Hang on to your hats...'Indy 4' set for 2008

Following the announcement of Steven Spielberg's proposed sci-fi "wormhole" project last week, the Internet's been full of talk and worry about Spielberg putting the kibosh on "Indiana Jones 4."

"Why does he have so many projects, why can't he focus on one thing, why doesn't he just make 'Indiana Jones' already," question the cries!

And yet, any filmmaker would tell you that a smart career builds bridges ahead of the current project. Of course Spielberg has a number of viable future projects on his roster. If he didn't, we wouldn't see feats of Herculean filmmaking like two films in a year ("War of the Worlds," "Munich," in 2005, for example), or we'd be waiting for Kubrickian decades for follow-up films.

Along with the reports of the "wormhole" project, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter may have inadvertently fueled fans' worries when they said that Spielberg would be doing either "Indiana Jones 4" or the Lincoln biopic next. Such uncertain talk, however, was totally unfounded since Spielberg himself has made it perfectly clear that his next film will be "Indiana Jones 4."

“I am about to make ‘Indiana Jones 4,’ which is, as far as I am concerned, the sweet dessert I give those who had to chow down on the bitter herbs that I’ve used in ‘Munich,’” Spielberg said.

This quote comes from a mere four months ago, and now today, news comes out of the Licensing 2006 International trade show in New York that plans are full steam ahead for a summer 2008 return for Indiana Jones!

Lucas Licensing told the Hollywood Reporter that they are seeking out licensing partners to produce "Indy" merchandise for "the summer 2007 release of a new 'Indiana Jones' video game... and the summer 2008 release of a new 'Indiana Jones' movie."

May your fears be laid to rest. Let the excitement begin!

Spielberg and Paramount Team Up for a Time-Traveling Film

Variety is reporting Steven Spielberg and Paramount Pictures are working on a space travel movie which Spielberg will direct.

The story will be based on an idea by Caltech physicist Kip S Thorne. Thorne believes that wormholes can be used to travel through time. The film will center, according to Variety, around a group of explorers who use a wormhole to enter another dimension.

Spielberg latest film, Munich, earned five Oscar nominations including a Best Director nomination for Spielberg. The critically acclaimed filmmaker has a fourth Indiana Jones movie in the works as well as an Abraham Lincoln biopic. Both of those movies may come before this sci-fi, time-traveling film.

JBlo is reporting that Spielberg is considering taking the helm on the video game big screen adaptation. However, they credit Variety as the source of the rumor, but we have confirmed that the industry sheet has not reported on this information. So for right now, we believe this is JUST a rumor.

We reported in May that Legendary Pictures (Batman Begins, Superman Returns) bought the rights to the film from Blizzard Entertainment, the company that makes the ever popular massive multi online  role playing game.

It's expected that Legendary Pictures paid somewhere between $3-6 million for the film rights.

Spielberg's filmography includes Munich, War of the Worlds, The Terminal, Catch Me If You Can, Minority Report, Artificial Intelligence: AI, Saving Private Ryan, Amistad, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Jurassic Park, Hook, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Color Purple, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Twilight Zone: The Movie, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Raiders of the Lost Ark, 1941, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Jaws.
